The maintenance of keyboards
Computer Keyboards can get dirty very easily; to clean the surface of a keyboard is very straight forward. Regular cleaning and maintenance of the keyboard is a necessary evil but should be added to your regular schedule of computer maintenance. In this guide however we will show you how to clean your keyboard thoroughly as well as giving it a quick once over, we will guide you through with the aid of photos and diagrams.

When cleaning the top of the keyboard, first, shutdown your PC and remove the mains plug, unplug the keyboard (remember which socket) and hold it upside down to release any debris from in between the keys (pressing the keys is a good way to release it). pour or spray the cleaning solution on the cloth, not the keyboard. You don't want any type of liquid getting inside the keyboard. Now take one of the cotton buds and put a couple of drops of the cleaning fluid on it, use the cotton bud to clean the sides of the keys.

All the keys can be removed although the larger keys (space bar, enter key, shift keys, backspace, caps lock, etc) can be difficult to put back so you might avoid removing them. When you have removed all the keys (except any keys you wish to avoid) use a can of compressed air or a small vacuum cleaner to remove dust and dirt from the keyboard. Use compressed air in small bursts and blow in a direction outward.

If you spill something on your keyboard you can clean it by disconnecting the keyboard from your computer and flushing it with distilled water. To do this, you will need to partially disassemble your keyboard (see your manufacturer's instructions on disassembly). Regular tap water can leave a residue and should not be used. If the substance has dried on the keyboard, you can soak the unit in distilled water then flush it again with clean distilled water. You must wait until the keyboard is completely dry before using it again and this may take several days. Using a blow-dryer to help it dry faster is not recommended as the components inside were not designed to accept that type of heat.

Now is a good time to give the keys a proper clean, for best results clean each one individually (the patience thing again) with the cloth and cleaning fluid, when clean, wipe them over with the dry cloth.

Take a good long look at the Keyboard's Cord and Connector. Check for dirt collection and make sure in pins are not broken or bent. Should your keyboard prove defective, you should simply purchase a new one rather than considering having it repaired. Keyboards are inexpensive and you install them simply by connecting to the rear of the computer. In most cases, it is less expensive, less time consuming and less of a problem to replace a keyboard which is not functioning correctly than it is to repair it.
