How KVM USB Ports Work
|
Just about any computer that you buy today comes with one or more Universal Serial Bus connectors on the back. We will look at USB ports from both a user and a technical standpoint. These USB connectors let you attach everything from mice to printers to your computer quickly and easily.
The operating system supports USB as well, so the installation of the device drivers is quick and easy, too. You will learn why the USB system is so flexible and how it is able to support so many devices so easily -- it's truly an amazing system! Compared to other ways of connecting devices to your computer, USB devices are incredibly simple!
Enter the USB (Universal Serial Bus) connectors. This method of connection has actually been around for a while. The MAC people were very innovative in their use of the USB port for a few years before the PC manufacturers ¡®caught on.¡¯ MAC computers completely did away with all the other device ports, such as the serial and parallel ports, and just put an array of USB ports in the back of their desktop and laptop computers.
Next, USB means plug-and-play. Yes, that¡¯s right. No more messing about with poorly-written, complicated manuals and disks just to install a mouse! If you have a fairly new computer, or plan on purchasing one soon, you will find that any device you plug into a USB port will be automatically recognized by your computer!
You may ask yourself if you are in a cyberspace dream world when your computer actually recognizes the printer you just attached via USB port! Even if your computer does not recognize the printer or device you just installed (by some odd circumstance), it will promptly give you a veritable ¡®laundry list¡¯ of manufacturer names and product names to choose from! Your life is suddenly so much easier.
Modems used the serial port, but so did some printers and a variety of odd things like Palm Pilots and digital cameras. Most computers have at most two serial ports, and they are very slow in most cases.
Printers connected to parallel printer ports, and most computers only came with one. Things like Zip drives, which need a high-speed connection into the computer, would use the parallel port as well, often with limited success and not much speed.
Devices that needed faster connections came with their own cards, which had to fit in a card slot inside the computer's case. Unfortunately, the number of card slots is limited and you needed a Ph.D. to install the software for some of the cards.
Incidentally, once the USB connectors became the industry standard, it was obvious that the transfer speed of data via these smart cables and connections far outshined the previous, older-style of connection ports and devices. USB-2 has recently come into play, and the data speed and versatility has increased yet again. This makes life easier for the consumer and the professional computer user alike!
The goal of USB is to end all of these headaches. The Universal Serial Bus gives you a single, standardized, easy-to-use way to connect up to 127 devices to a computer.
