What is KVM over IP?
|
The latest development in KVM switch technology is the ability to access the KVM remotely from over the Internet using a standard browser. Intelligent devices; machines and instruments containing embedded computers, are now an integral part of our world economy. This KVM technology is known as remote access over IP (Internet Provider).
From manufacturing machinery and medical instruments to telecommunications systems and digital signage players, intelligent devices can be found maintaining our day to day environment, facilitating our business transactions, and making our lives easier. It is available as a stand-alone solution that can attach to a quality grade KVM or as a solution where KVM and remote IP access are combined into a single unit.
Remote Server Access (KVM over IP) products are a new breed of non-intrusive hardware based solutions which allow you both in-band and out-of-band access to all the servers connected to your KVM switch.
KVM devices can also control machines across the Internet or attached to the LAN. Software in the client PC converts keyboard, video and mouse signals into IP packets that are sent over the network. At the receiving end, the IP-based KVM switch is cabled to the network and to the computers. Utilizing advanced security and regardless of operating system, these KVM Over IP products allow you to remotely control all your servers/CPU, Including pre-boot functions such as editing CMOS settings and power cycling your servers.
Newer techniques such as those used by OPMA management subsystem cards and other implementations obtain the video data directly from the graphics chip using the industry standard DVI bus. With an IP-to-KVM device, standard KVM switches can be used over an IP network. The IP-to-KVM unit converts IP packets to KVM signals.
Access to most remote or "KVM" over IP devices today use a web browser but proprietary viewer software can increase performance. A consideration of the viewer software relative to a browser based application is the area of ActiveX or Java security.
KVM over IP devices have been implemented in many different ways. For the graphics capture portion, PCI based KVM over IP cards use a variation of a technique known as screen scraping where the PCI bus master KVM over IP card would access graphics data directly from the graphics memory buffer.
