What is OEM?
|
OEM is a term that may have been coined in the 1950s by IBM to refer to a vendor that purchased and resold IBM computers, also soon after in the early 1960s by Digital Equipment Corporation and its vendors. OEM generally means "original equipment manufacturer." Sometimes it is referred to as "open-ended market" and used interchangeably with "bulk-pack," "white box," "brown box," and "gray market." It refers to the manufacturer of a component of, or subassembly used in, the production of a larger item.
Originally, an OEM (original equipment manufacturer) was a company that supplied equipment to other companies to resell or incorporate into another product using the reseller's brand name. It refers to companies that make products for others to repackage and sell.
For example, a maker of refrigerators like Frigidaire might sell its refrigerators to a retailer like Sears to resell under a brand name owned by Sears. Resellers buy OEM products in bulk, minus the costly retail packaging that comes with individually sold units. A number of companies, both equipment suppliers and equipment resellers, still use this meaning. The product itself is essentially the same as its more expensive, retail-packaged sibling. OEM products are used in many industries, but are perhaps most prevalent in electronics.
Almost all PC component and software vendors make two versions of the same product based on a difference in the distribution channels.
One is the OEM products which are sold mainly to system builders, large ones such as HP and Dell (the OEMs) and many small ones such as the mom-and-dad shop on the corner and the DIY builders. The OEM products are of the same quality and often carry the same manufacturer warranty as their retail counterparts (the single-pack).These bulk-pack products do not have fancy packaging materials and are often produced in much higher volume, both of which result in much lower prices that have not been available to the public. They also often include supporting materials such as manuals and drivers when applicable.
The second one is the retail boxed products that are sold mainly through retailers. OEM software will have different product numbers than retail packages, and support may be provided by the VAR, rather than the maker of the software. Functionally, OEM and retail versions of software should be essentially the same.
OEM goods are a great value for the consumer and are environmentally friendlier than waste-producing retail packaging. However, for those new to technology, retail packaging will supply everything you need for the product, often including a toll-free number for support.
Meanwhile, over-the-counter OEM products might be better suited to those who are at least minimally computer savvy. Our KVM OEM Products include1-Port KVM ,4-Port KVM ,8-Port KVM ,16-Port KVM ,Industrial PC online.
