How to Choose a KVM Switch
When choosing a KVM Switch, there are many important things to keep in mind. For example, you can connect two, four, eight, ten or twelve computers to a KVM switch with all of them sharing a single device.Below you will find things you should consider when purchasing a KVM Switch.

A KVM switch (Keyboard, Video and Mouse) is a hardware device used for sharing a keyboard, monitor or mouse on multiple computers. There are several factors to consider while choosing a compatible KVM switch for your computers.

When choosing a KVM switch, keep in mind the number of computers you want to connect. For example, you can connect two, four, eight, ten or twelve computers to a KVM switch with all of them sharing a single device.

The first aspect to address when purchasing KVM equipment is the platform to be supported. KVMs come in an assortment of technologies, including PS/2, USB, PC, Sun, Mac, DVI, ADC, Dual Video, Serial, and others. Multiplatform KVMs are available for heterogeneous environments, as are cable converters, which can be less costly. Multi-User KVM switches range from smaller 4-user KVM switches able to handle dozens of servers, to integrated KVM switching systems capable of allowing hundreds of administrators to control thousands of servers.

If you plan on creating shared access to a monitor chooses a KVM switch that supports that monitor's video resolution. It's always advisable to choose a KVM switch that supports all standard resolutions.

One KVM switches provide audio support. For example, the Rose Electronics Ultra View Pro series will support audio for users and computers. In addition, Avocent AMX devices provide multi-user switches that support audio functionality.

Choose a switch that suites you.Analog or digital is the next big question when choosing a KVM solution.

Analog KVM Switches utilize coax . Analog systems typically support cables up to 1,000 feet (300 meters), whereas digital KVMs operate over IP and can be utilized throughout a global network. Analog KVM allow relatively short distances and are ideal for desktop applications, but a few KVM manufactures use coax with their matrix KVM Switches. Digital or IP KVM Switches have been the quickest growing segment of the KVM market eliminating the need for direct cable connections or user stations by allowing you to securely connect to your servers and devices from any location either within your LAN, or remotely from any location.

Ensure that the KVM switch has security features such as setting permission levels and establishing access rights to ports. These are useful in managing users who access their computers through the KVM switch. Most KVM over IP devices allow an administrator to leverage existing authentication schema such as LDAP, Active Directory, RADIUS, or TACACS.

Decide which features you'd like to have in your KVM switch and compare prices based on selected features.
